Serves 1

01.

Add the frozen açaí, banana, blueberries, Greek yoghurt and 30ml of milk to a blender. Pulse until thick and smooth. Sweeten with honey and add the remaining milk as needed.

02.

Spoon the mixture into a bowl and top with the granola, nut butter, coconut flakes and chia seeds.

Tips and tricks

For the perfect homemade açaí bowl, start by using frozen açaí and fruit to create a thick, spreadable texture for the base, rather than a runnier smoothie. To manage the thickness, add the milk gradually to find the right texture for your bowl.

A frozen banana is a must-have ingredient, as it brings a natural sweetness to balance the rich, tartness of the açaí and helps to make the base creamy. Before adding the honey, it’s worth tasting the mixture, as some açaí purées are sweeter than others.

If you have the time, chill the bowl before serving to maintain the thickness and consistency of the açaí base.

Where the açaí bowl comes from

Açaí bowls are deeply associated with Brazil, where the berries grow on açaí palms native to the Amazon region. The berries were traditionally consumed as a savoury or lightly sweetened purée by indigenous communities and local river people.

In the 1970s and '80s, açaí made its way to major Brazilian cities, becoming popular within beach culture, before evolving into the frozen blended bowl that’s recognised internationally today. The Gracie family, founders of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, is also credited with popularising the sweeter blend, topped with granola, as a convenient, energy-rich meal for athletes.

Toppings that actually work

For the best results, aim for a mix of creamy, crunchy, fresh and juicy açaí bowl toppings. Fresh fruit, such as banana, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and mango, works well with the creamy, tart açaí base. Or you can opt for seasonal varieties depending on the time of year.

Crunchy ingredients, including granola, toasted coconut, cacao nibs and chopped nuts, provide a welcome contrast to the smooth base, whereas nut butters and yoghurt add richness and enhance the creamy texture.

How to get the right consistency

An açaí bowl should be thick enough to eat with a spoon, but not drink. Aim for a consistency somewhere between soft-serve ice cream and a very thick smoothie. Using frozen fruit for the base helps to achieve this overall creaminess.

If the mixture is a little thin, you can add more frozen bananas or berries. Scrape down the sides of the blender before adding more liquid to first check the consistency.
